My Top 5 Software Applications in 2005

The year 2005 is coming to an end, so I thought I'd share with you the top five software applications which have either increased my personal productivity and/or have had a large impact in my surroundings.

# OpenLDAP has seen a huge step forward in features, performance and stability. As an LDAP directory server, I rate it second to none, although if I have to gripe, it is about lack of good documentation (mailing lists do help, but there is no comprehensive manual out there). I know, I know; if I had more time, I'd try to contribute. # There are dozens of Wiki implementations most of which are Open Source, but my vote goes to DokuWiki for its ease of installation and its features. I've written before that what I like is its use of plain text files for backend storage. # VMWare helps me greatly as a developer and systems integrator because it allows to install and test sundry systems on one physical machine, even when on the road. Their addition of the free VMWare Player made the experience even more enjoyable. # Novell's Suse 10 gets my vote as the best GNU/Linux desktop experience, followed closely by Ubuntu Linux. I'm more the server guy, but if I needed a GNU/Linux desktop, I'd use Suse 10 respectively OpenSuse
  1. The very best RSS feed reader is NetNewsWire. I rest my case.
