IBM Blog Template

There is a a lot of talk on the new (?) IBM Blog Template which will be delivered with 7.0.2.

I've only so far viewed some of the screen shots and this live site, and I must say the template doesn't wow me a bit.

The idea of being able to blog from the Notes client is very good, because it allows people to post when offline, having the blog then replicate back to Domino as soon as they are back in the office (or via PassThru if that is available). That was in fact the reason I created blogit, a Domino server add-in task which posts via XML-RPC to my WordPress (or any other compatible) weblog.

The IBM Blog Template doesn't appear to allow online posting from a web cafe which I consider an absolute must.

The template also seems to lack themes. Oh yes, the CSS and the graphics can be changed, but that isn't quite plug and play, now is it? Considering the almost countless number of WordPress themes, only a CSS freak would start tweaking the template's CSS. IMHO, not quite something for a Small and Medium Business to do…

All in all, I don't envision Lotus Domino blog template being a great hit, if only because hosting packages for WordPress, Movable Type & co are a dime a dozen, whereas Domino hosting is quite dear.

The new blog template does allow posting from a web browser, just like the open source version did. But while DominoBlog allowed the use of themes, this version removed it because it was not deemed robust enough. Hopefully they will add an enhanced version of this functionality back in soon.

The one thing that I really want them to add to the template is the ability to post via XML-RPC. I would also expect to see a more enhanced interface for web creation.
