Have young children? Educate, don't train them

Chris Linfoot writes:

Children are not challenged to question what they are doing with the computer, whether there might be another or a better way, or even whether the computer truly is the right tool for the task in hand.

The Brits and their data

The Brits have trouble keeping a few bytes safe. Now they've misplaced records on its Teaching Register. Before that, they lost records on dangerous criminals, prison officers, taxpayers, bank customers, and patients.

Their measures aren't working…

Is there any data left they haven't lost? :-) I know the bytes are all recyclable, but you gotta be more careful, chaps!

Does anybody care about `download estimators'?

You want a file. You download it. Basta. Do you pay attention to a download estimator? I mean this kind of thingy seen on an IBM site?

Small files take no time. Larger files a bit longer. Of course not everybody has a broadband connection to the Internet, but does a long download time prevent you from downloading a file you want?

Cisco.com hacked?

All the 't's are missing from Cisco's home. Here is the source:

Update: 1/2 hour later, their CMS had fixed it all again. ;-)

VirtualBox and iSCSI

After getting iSCSI running on my ReadyNAS NV+ I wanted to test VirtualBox's iSCSI initiator with it.

VirtualBox comes with an iSCSI initiator that wants to be configured with the CLI tools. First, I added the target to VirtualBox with the VBoxManage tool:

VBoxManage addiscsidisk
      -server nv.mens.de
      -target iqn.2001-04.de.mens:storage.readynas.01

iSCSI disk created. UUID: ff2c0965-48e9-4016-9a53-bc1113029b68

As soon as that step completes, the target is visible from within the GUI, and I can select the iSCSI disk and attach that to a virtual machine like any other disk.

Remember though, never to attach a single target to more than one virtual machine at a time: he who writes last, writes best.

Is Gmail getting a massage?

ReadyNAS NV+ with iSCSI

Stefan Rubner finally convinced me to install the iSCSI modules he assembled for the ReadyNAS, onto my ReadyNAS NV+.

His software works as advertised, and installation was a cinch after I installed the EnableRootSSH add-on to the NV.

I experimented with the iSCSI initiator in Windows 2008 as well as with the initiator of the Linux-iSCSI Project: both behave nicely with the ReadyNAS target.

Nice stuff. Thanks Stefan!

Same as in real life…

A bit as in real life, I suppose, but this came as a surprise nevertheless:

I'll just wait until the can is put back on the floor. :-)
