I spent an hour test driving this software and it looks good. A clean web interface to manage the lot, shell access for root and optionally for individual users offer what a small business would need.
Note to self: keep an eye on this project.
It seems like ages ago when we submitted DAD/miniDAD as our entry to the VMware competition, but we still get the odd question asked via email.
I spent some time on Sunday answering a few of them as best I could.
The list of winners of the VMware Challenge has been published.
Congratulations to the winners!
This is the week in which VMware plans to announce the winners of the Ultimate VMware Appliance Challenge.
Will DAD/miniDAD get a prize?
Stay tuned…
The ten Ubuntu Linux disks I ordered compliments of Ubuntu have arrived. I find it very generous that they ship them free of charge, and I always order ten disks, keeping one myself and passing on the other nine.
I haven't as yet had time to have a look at 6.06, but I'm looking forward to doing so. We had put 5.05 into DAD/miniDAD because 6.06 was unfortunately delayed…
Our VMware appliance DAD/miniDAD, the LDAP-controlled CentOS server with embedded preconfigured Ubuntu miniDAD clients that "know" how to contact DAD is still available for download, and we'd appreciate some feedback.
The combination of the two appliances in one is quite interesting, and they even contain an LDAP-controlled software distribution system we developed specially for DAD & miniDAD.
We've created DAD for the enterprise administrator who wants to easily deploy Open Source to the site's user-base and who wants a migration path. All utilities supplied with DAD are geared towards making the process both painless and efficient. We've even included a utility which, when run on a Windows server, will export a list of users in such a way as that these can easily be imported into DAD. Alternatively, an NT trust can be set up between DAD and the Windows world.
The appliance we submitted as part of the Ultimate VMware Appliance Challenge is now available for download from VMware's appliances directory.
What to review it for us?
There are currently 70 odd appliances available for download on VMware's Virtual Appliances site.
The countdown for the Ultimate Virtual Appliance Challenge ends in one day and seven hours (depending of course in which timezone you are located). I'm relaxed at the moment, because we've already submitted our mega applicance, which is in fact, an appliance called miniDAD located within an appliance called DAD.
Submission was exciting. Shovelling one and a half gigs around the place isn't easy at the best of times, but we got it there in one piece. Not being very confident about VMware's "it has been verified" status, I sent them a mail asking for an MD5 sum of the file. VMware's John Troyer was kind enough to go to the extra work of getting it for me, and it really does verify.
Now it is time to lean back and cross my fingers. Help me with the finger crossing, will you?
